Fight of the Century

Floyd Mayweather, Jr. vs. Manny Pacquiao, billed as The Fight of the Century was a professional boxing match between the eight-division world champion Manny Pacquiao and undefeated five-division world champion Floyd Mayweather, Jr. It took place on May 2, 2015, at the MGM Grand Garden Arena in Las Vegas, Nevada. Mayweather won the contest by a controversial unanimous decision, with two judges scoring it 116–112 and the other 118–110.

We used 3 network tools: ping, traceroute and httping, which measure the delay, Internet path and packet loss of the connection between clients, Raspberry Pis in this case, and various providers screening the boxing match. The Pis were placed in users’ homes, as we anticipate people watch the boxing from home. The sites we measured the path, delay and loss to where: HBO, Sky, Showtime.

Delay distributions from a Pi to HBO server, left EPDF, right ECDF, 6 hours during the event.

Cat and whisker plots showing the delay distributions to two sites over the same six hours as above.

One import aspect of network measurements is the temporal aspect, and in the CheesePi project we (re) measured the sites, before or after (or both) an event. For the boxing example, we measured after the fight.

The data and more analysis to come.
